GFCI vs AFCI: What Every Lake Charles Homeowner Should Know

Two of the most important safety devices in your home are also two of the most misunderstood. GFCI and AFCI protection do very different jobs, and knowing the difference helps you understand why your electrician recommends them and where the code requires them.

Here is the plain-English version.

What a GFCI does

GFCI stands for ground fault circuit interrupter. Its job is to protect you from shock. It constantly monitors the electricity flowing out and coming back on a circuit, and if it detects even a tiny imbalance, meaning current is escaping somewhere it should not, it shuts the circuit off in a fraction of a second.

That imbalance often means electricity is traveling through water or through a person. GFCIs are why you see those outlets with test and reset buttons in kitchens and bathrooms.

What an AFCI does

AFCI stands for arc fault circuit interrupter. Its job is to prevent fires. Damaged, loose, or aging wiring can create small electrical arcs that throw off intense heat and can ignite surrounding materials. An AFCI recognizes the signature of a dangerous arc and cuts power before it starts a fire.

Where each one is required

Modern electrical code calls for these protections in specific places:

  • GFCI protection in kitchens, bathrooms, laundry areas, garages, and all outdoor outlets
  • AFCI protection in most living areas, including bedrooms, living rooms, and hallways
  • Combination devices that provide both, used where the code calls for it

If your home is older, it may not have this protection everywhere it should. Adding it is a straightforward upgrade we handle as part of our outlets, switches, and breakers service.

How to tell if yours are working

GFCI and AFCI devices have test buttons for a reason. Press the test button, confirm the power cuts off, then press reset. If a device will not trip or will not reset, it has likely failed and should be replaced. A device that trips constantly is also telling you something, and it is worth having the circuit checked rather than ignoring it.
